Frequently asked questions

Questions people ask

A few of the things people want to know before they reach out. If your question is not here, the contact page is the best place to ask.

What is orofacial myofunctional therapy?

It is a set of gentle exercises that retrain the muscles of the face, mouth, and tongue so they work the way they are meant to. The aim is better breathing, swallowing, and a proper resting position for the tongue. Julia builds the plan around your needs and coaches you through it.

Who do you work with?

Adults and children ages four and up. People usually come in for mouth breathing, snoring, tongue tie, tongue thrust, clenching or grinding, and trouble sleeping. For women, Julia also focuses on how hormonal changes affect breathing and sleep.

Do you offer virtual sessions?

Yes. Julia sees clients in person in Manhattan and the San Francisco Bay Area, and over Zoom anywhere in the world. Many people complete their whole program remotely from home.

What does a program look like, and how long does it take?

Every plan is different because it is built around your goals. It often blends myofunctional therapy, Buteyko breathing, and sleep coaching, with regular check-ins between sessions. The assessment page walks through what the first visit and the plan look like.

What is Buteyko breathing?

Buteyko is a method of gentle breathing exercises that helps you breathe through your nose, settle your breathing, and ease habits like over-breathing and mouth breathing. It is often used to support better sleep, less snoring, and lower day-to-day stress.

Do you diagnose or treat sleep apnea?

No. Julia does not diagnose or treat sleep apnea. Myofunctional therapy and breathing re-education can support the care your physician provides, and Julia works alongside your medical team and refers out when a sleep study or medical treatment is needed.

How do I get started?

Book a free consultation through the contact page. It is a short call to talk through what is going on and whether Happy Myo is a good fit. From there, Julia sets up an assessment and a plan.

Is this a replacement for medical or dental care?

No. Everything Happy Myo offers is educational and supportive. It does not diagnose or treat medical conditions, and it works best alongside your doctor, dentist, or other specialists.
